Installing the Emby media software was pretty straightforward. Getting the Calibre e-book manager set up was a little more complicated because I had to install the Docker container application first, then install and configure Calibre. Fortunately there are online tutorials that help with the installation and setup.
I've currently got six 12 TB drives in the Synology, so I can double my storage by adding more drives. And if that's not enough there's an expansion unit that adds another 12 bays! But my first upgrade is going to be adding more memory.
I set up a smaller media server for my daughter in law, using a Synology DS218+ with two 4 TB drives.
If you're looking for a NAS with brains enough to do almost anything, you can't go wrong with Synology.
My existing NAS is a Synology 1618+ that I had filled with 4TB WD Reds in a SHR array. Since I've reached capacity on that I figured I'd go the new NAS route rather than try to painstakingly install larger drives one by one and rebuild the array each time. I filled 6 slots with WD 12TB Reds, leaving myself some room for future expansion. This 2419+ made it even easier to install a 10Gb NIC. You only need to unscrew 2 screws to access the PCIe slot and then you can click the card into place without even needing to screw it in because of how the plastic clamp works.
For someone new to NAS, Synology makes setup a complete breeze. They really know their audience. Get right to using your NAS from outside of your network with QuickConnect without ever having to forward a port. Their Package Center is full of useful utilities like DS Photo, which can allow you to remotely backup your photos and use the NAS as your own personal photo cloud.
I have nothing but good things to say about this company and this product.
1) their licensing sucks, if you want to make it mail server it costs per year per mbox, which blows
2) licensing for camera is one time deal but its $50 per camera so if you add cost of unit, disks, camera and in addition license per camera its just crazy expensive solution.
3) does not have 10gb nic, or slot for m2 storage, you must buy pci card, but its one slot so you have to chose, you cannot have both. Qnap has at least 10 gig nic.
Other than that I am pretty happy with the unit.
The user interface is clean and straightforward, though I don't quite understand why NAS makers insist on doing the "fake desktop environment" thing with their web UIs when something simpler would work just fine. It works, though, so I can't complain.
Adding community-provided packages is easy, and with SSH access provided (out of the box) it's easy to shell into the NAS to run custom software. It'll even run Docker containers.
Pretty happy with this purchase.
